Sean: I think that is some very useful advice for people. Find someone who has what you want. Do what they do and you’ll get what they’ve got. But if you continue listening to all the people around you, you’re going to continue getting what they’ve got.
I remember I went to my friends and I was all excited about everything. I was like, “Everyone can do it and we’re all going to get rich in real estate” and the same thing, they were like, “Oh, you can’t do that. It’s a scam. It’s illegal. It doesn’t work.” Everybody I talked to said the same thing. I felt down in the dumps. I was like, “Man, this sucks.” Then I stood back and I was like, well, do I really want what this guy has? Do I really want what my friend has? He’s a mess. All these people, I started really looking at it. Then I started looking at people that had what I wanted, especially in real estate.
Real estate like you said, you can scale it to whatever you want. We’re talking small scale, $70-$80,000 houses. You can do $100 billion projects, if you so decide. So, that’s an absolutely great point because they don’t want to see you ultimately succeed, because it’s going to make them feel bad.
I have friends now that won’t even talk to me because of success, because we don’t relate anymore. We just can’t relate to where we were before. So, I think that’s a great point. Then your attitude about making money off any difficulty that comes your way. Your attitude is perfect because you could have kind of sulked and put your head between your legs and go, “Woe is me. I couldn’t find a buyer for these. I’ll just let it go.” But you went and looked at the opportunity and said, “Hey, what could I do with this?”
In business, in real estate, in any walks of life, you have to improvise, adapt, and overcome. That’s what we learned in the Marine Corps, was improvise, and adapt, and overcome to the certain situation, which you’ve done. I’ve got to commend you completely because not only did you take action around your job, and you found a way to find a realtor, you found a way to make bids, you found a way to see the property, you found a way to market and sell the property around your 60 hour job and you didn’t procrastinate. You just took action and did it. Then you didn’t listen to what other people said, you kept your motivation up. You kept focused on your goal. You had the attitude to be able to turn obstacle into a monetary benefit. That’s incredible! If you want to know the traits of success, that’s it.
